Wednesday News Letter

August 16, 2017

Dear Parents,

Consider our Theme for the Year: “Find God in All Things”.  We will focus on this theme with all of our studies.  And so I begin our first Brown Envelope Letter with this quote:

“A common mistake we make is that we look for God in places where we ourselves wish to find him, yet even in the physical reality this is a complete failure. For example, if you lost your car keys, you would not search where you want to search, you would search where you must in order to find them.”  ― Criss Jami, Killosophy

Please read on for important information:

*Thank you to Nicole Deputy, Dawn Flynn, Jennifer Karrick,  and the rest of the Home and School Officers who supplied coffee, juice, and bagels for our “Tears and Cheers” get together today.  I hope everyone had a chance to stop by to grab a bite and visit with old friends and make new friends! As I type this letter, your children are already settled into their classrooms

*Another chance to make new friends and keep the old will be on Thursday, August 24th. Our HSA will hold an Ice Cream Social outside the Mac Center (Gymnasium) from 6:00-7:00pm. (See attached and enclosed flyer).  We will also have tables set up with the chance to sign up for after school clubs.  Please take the time to stop by with your child.  This is another opportunity to meet other Viking families.  I am still very close friends with 3 sets of parents I met for the first time at a Viking Ice Cream Social 11 years ago!

*Just a reminder to use the Morning Carline tomorrow.  PreK and Kindergarten parents will have the option to park and walk your children to their classes for the remainder of this week.  1st through 8th grade parents should use the carline to drop their kiddos off.   Remember that during afternoon carline, if you are the parent of a Kindergarten student, you can park in front of the school to pick your child up.  Older siblings of kindergarteners can meet at the front of the school to be picked up, as well.  If your children are first grade and older, you will need to use the carline at the back of the school.  If you arrive to the carline before 2:50, we ask that you stop your car at the corner of the wall until our 2:50 bell rings.  (Cones will be placed there to remind you).

*If you have not done so already, don’t forget to turn in any forms that were picked up during Back-to-School Night: Blue Emergency Cards, and any immunization forms, registration papers, etc. that have not been turned into the office, yet.

*Every Friday at 9:00, we hold Children’s Mass at the church.  Parents and community are always welcome to join us. Many times our students like to sit with their parents during Mass.  However, in order to learn and understand proper etiquette during our Eucharistic celebration, we ask that all students sit with their classes through September 22nd.  After that, your child is welcome to sit with you.

 * Our Saint Olaf Parish Youth Group will hold a 5K race on Saturday, August 26, 7:00am in the MacCenter.  Please consider supporting the Youth Group by either running/walking during this event or volunteering.  There are many positions available and your help would be welcomed. As most members of the Youth Group are also school students, volunteer hours served at this event will count toward your required service hours.  Please read the following correspondence from Krista and Andrea our Youth Group Advisors:

Hello Everyone,           Our YG 5K is just around the corner!  There are still plenty of voluntary positions that need to be filled, including selling tickets after masses this weekend, which BTW, is our last weekend to sell tickets!  Our goal is to have 100 runners and currently, 30 people have signed up.          I would like to say thank you to those businesses and ministries that are sponsoring our event.  Our financial goal was between $2500-$5000 and at present we have raised $800.  If you haven't done so already, please mail your sponsorship to the rectory, 276 E. 1700 So. 84010.           As we attempt to fill swag bags for our participants, our donations have been a bit meager.  I have added a line in the sign up genius to include a place to donate cash specifically for swag bags.  However, if you have any ideas about swag bag items or a product you would like to donate, please contact me.

To sell tickets:

Thank you for all your support Krista & Andrea

*This is a friendly reminder for those families who chose to receive the 5% discount by Paying for Tuition in Full.  It is due by August 31st.

*I would like to thank Joan Moffat, Samantha Moore and their crew for organizing and running our semi-annual used uniform sale.  We were happy to offer uniforms at a deeply discounted price.  We were also very happy to have earned $1,179.00 from that sale.  It was definitely a win-win situation.

*Do you not share the Catholic faith?  Are you a “Cradle Catholic” who has been away from Church for a while?  Are you curious about the Catholic prayer and want to know a little more about it?  Whether all of this Catholic stuff is new to you or you wear your faith comfortably, we have enclosed a booklet “Catholic: Prayer for Catholic Families” in your Brown Envelope.  Take a peek at it!

*If you have a child in 1st grade, 5th grade or any grade in-between, who may be interested in joining Cub Scouts, you have a chance to ask questions at a Cub Scout Open House on August 29th, at 7:00 pm in the EDP Room.  (Please see the attached flyer).

*The Utah State Department of Environmental Quality has begun a drive to test the water quality of public schools.  They are specifically testing for lead in the water.  The Davis County Health Department will test Davis County Public Schools within the next few months.  The Director of Davis County Health Department will directly oversee the testing in the public schools.  I am happy to say that the Director of Davis County Health Department, Dennis Keith, also happens to be a parent in our school.  He has offered to have our school water tested as well.  We have no reason to believe that we have lead in our water, but we will test it to make sure.  This testing will take place sometime in September.  In the meantime, understand that our water filling station filters the water.
