Saint Olaf Catholic School

Wednesday News Letter

November 15, 2017

*I hope you enjoyed the extra long break last weekend.  While your children were home, faculty and staff attended a retreat and workshops during our Professional Educator Day.  The day began with a Mass in the Chapel followed by a beautiful retreat called “Peace from a distance”.  We then attended an active shooter presentation and training with Mr. Lance VanDongen.  Our procedures continue to evolve as we learn better ways to cope with recent tragedies. Teachers then split up in the afternoon.  Our Middle School teachers attended a Google and Chromebook training at Saint Vincent’s Catholic School in order to better use our technology.  Our PreK and Elementary School teachers worked on mapping our Math Curriculum, to be sure there are no holes in our Math education.  We love to learn!

*Thank you for your continued donations to the PreK’s Toys for Tots toy drive, so far we have collected $315 and our two boxes are almost full!  You may still donate toys until December 8th or you may send monetary donations to the office. Thank you for supporting this wonderful cause!

*If you have not visited the school recently, then you have not seen our Hall of Heroes.  Please take the time to stroll the halls to see pictures of the many Veterans who have fought for our freedom and rights.  We will honor our veterans through the end of November.  We will also honor our veterans at our annual Thanksgiving Feast, November 21st.  We love our veterans!!

*EDP payments are due tomorrow, November 16th. Late charges will be assessed. Thank you!

*Saint Olaf’s Council of Women will hold their annual “Stocking Stuffer Service Project” to benefit Saint Vincent de Paul Homeless Shelter.  Parish and School families traditionally participate in this fun event each year.  All are invited to join in this joyful evening of service, fellowship and Christmas carols. Festivities will be held December 1st beginning at 6:00pm in the McNamara Center.  (Please see the enclosed flyer).

*Our school will hold a week-long collection drive during the last week of November.  Please watch for more information to come home soon.

Home and School Association News:

*Our annual Thanksgiving Feast will take place on Tuesday, November 21st.  We plan on celebrating our Veterans during our feast, as well!  Dinner will be scheduled according to the student’s grade.  Families with multiple students will dine with the youngest class.  Please see the enclosed reservation form.  Please return this reservation form with payment by Thursday, November 16th (that’s tomorrow). You are not required to order the Thanksgiving Feast plate; you can bring a home lunch to dine.  However, please refrain from bringing other restaurant food (i.e. Pizza, Chinese, Burgers, etc.).  Please note:  We are still in need of help with the event.  The volunteer opportunities are scheduled in shifts, so that you could still enjoy a meal with your child AND earn service hours.  You can sign up for help on our LOTSA Helping Hands Website.

*We would like to sponsor our first “Snow Clothes Swap”.  Utah has the “greatest snow on earth” and Bountiful, Utah gets a whole bunch of that great snow!  Saint Olaf elementary students go outside for 2 recesses each day. If the students want to play in the snow, they are required to wear snow pants, winter jackets, mittens, boots and hat.  The idea of the clothing swap is that children grow so quickly, and since they are required to wear snow clothes at recess, instead of buying new items each year, simply bring them in and swap for a larger size.  In order for the swap to work, it would require as much participation in swaps/donations as possible.  Beginning in December, every Friday (excluding winter break) through January for 1 hour after school, you can come into the school and our HSA will hold a “shop” where you can pick out something “new for your child.  (Please see the enclosed flyer).
